A public address announcer was fired after making a derogatory comment during a high school football game between Christ Church and Riverside in Greenville. The remark, made during halftime, compared South Carolina State University—a historically Black institution—to the state’s Department of Corrections.
Though the announcer issued an apology over the intercom, Christ Church leaders stated the comment was “inconsistent with our values” and confirmed the announcer was let go. SC State also responded, emphasizing the university’s legacy of excellence and calling for respect and understanding.
