In response to a disturbing rise in gun violence — especially involving youth — Spartanburg Mayor Jerome Rice is calling on the entire community to take action. In a public letter, the mayor urges young people to reject violence, encourages parents and guardians to be proactive, and calls for responsible gun ownership.
So far this year, 41 firearms have been stolen from vehicles — many with no sign of forced entry. As concern grows, city leaders are exploring preventative strategies like gun safety workshops and youth internships. 7 News’ Lauren Miller reports on the mayor’s plan to make Spartanburg safer.
