AAA: Summer travel expected to drop for first time since 2009

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -- AAA is predicting the first drop in summer travel in a decade as the Fourth of July weekend kicks off. However, their report says of those who do travel, most will be driving, which has state troopers reminding people to be careful. "We hope you have a great fourth of July, but we want you to have a safe one, as well," said South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper Joe Hovis. While it might not be the volume of traffic you typically see for the Fourth, Hovis said it's more than drivers have experienced over the last several months. "People will be going to different places, some of our resort spots throughout the state or even out of state," Hovis said. "People [are also] just staying at home, going to the grocery store. But it's going to be an increased volume of traffic." AAA's report said road trips will make up <a href="https://newsroom.aaa.com/2020/06/aaa-forecasts-americans-will-take-700-million-trips-this-summer/" target="_blank">97% of summer travel this year</a>, totaling about 680 million trips. That may sound like a lot, but those numbers are down 3% from last year. Fewer people on the roads may have helped lower traffic fatalities. Hovis said there have been 35 fewer deaths in South Carolina this year compared to the same period last year. While it's not a significant drop, he said it's a start. However, their goal is always zero. "Is it an achievable goal? Of course it is, but really it all starts with you, the driver, the person sitting in that car," Hovis said. That's the approach state health officials want people to take when it comes to lowering COVID-19 numbers, too. They say if you do leave home this weekend, make sure you social distance and wear a mask.
Some citizens still traveling for 4th of July

GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - While many people have put the brakes on traveling this July 4th, some are going ahead with their plans. “It’s amazing how our beaches are just packed,” Deb Metcalf, who owns Travel Agents International in Greenville, said. With many travel bans in effect, Metcalf said international travel is down significantly, but people are still traveling within the U.S. “Most of the people that do travel are willing to take that chance,” Metcalf said, “They’re willing to get on an airplane, willing to wear a mask and they’re willing to go to a destination.” According to VRBO, three South Carolina beaches are among the top ten travel destinations this July 4th. The vacation rental company said properties in Hilton head, Myrtle Beach and Charleston are in high demand. “You can’t find a hotel room down there right now. It’s full,” Metcalf said. A recent spike in cases through the state may have some contemplating if they should travel, but a change of plans could cost you. “I usually try to book it through a company that if you do have to cancel at the last minute you can get a refund, but most insurances do not cover a pandemic so a lot of packages are not covered,” Metcalf said. For those planning on traveling to the coast, new regulations are now in effect for many vacation spots. As of this week, masks are required in most indoor and some outdoor public areas along the coast. North Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms and Edisto Beach are among the areas with mandatory face mask requirements. People should check with local officials for specific details, as each city has different requirements.
SC Apple Festival making major changes due to COVID-19

WESTMINSTER, S.C. (FOX Carolina) - The South Carolina Apple Festival is going digital as the COVID-19 pandemic continues across the world. An announcement on the festival's Facebook page shows that the craft fair on Main Street in Westminster is being cancelled, and that the apple growers that bring their fare to the festival will be celebrated on social media. The post asks local business owners to decorate store fronts and for residents to shop local. They also asked their audience to visit the orchards featured. Vendors who paid for a booth this year will get a refund.
