A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Spartanburg Methodist College following a deadly on-campus shooting that occurred on New Year’s Day in 2024. According to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, a campus safety officer attempted to arrest the driver of a pickup truck who was going the wrong way on a one-way street. A struggle followed, ending with the officer fatally shooting the driver. The lawsuit claims the officer used excessive and unjustified force and names the college, its police department, and the officer as defendants.
Spartanburg Methodist College has declined to comment at this time.
