After months of public debate, Spartanburg City Council has voted to dismantle the iconic downtown clock tower. In a 4–2 vote, the council approved a plan to preserve key pieces — including the clock face and inner workings — which will be displayed in the new city-county building plaza.
City leaders say keeping the entire structure would have cost nearly $900,000 and impacted funding for the Morgan Square redevelopment. Some residents are still voicing disappointment, but officials say this change honors both past and future generations.
