South Carolina law enforcement is taking action after three state troopers were recently struck while working roadside. A new statewide initiative, Operation Keep Us Safe, is cracking down on drivers who violate the Move Over Law and distracted driving laws.
At a news conference, officers and families of fallen troopers urged the public to slow down and move over to save lives. Senior Trooper Michael Rao, killed in 2002, is one of many honored on a memorial wall that officers hope won’t grow longer.
Violators could face $300–$500 fines, but some officers say harsher penalties are needed. One state lawmaker is already planning to introduce legislation that would add points to licenses for move over law violations.
