The South Carolina Attorney General has confirmed that the swatting hoax that shut down the University of South Carolina campus on August 24 was orchestrated by an online group. In a statement released today, Attorney General Alan Wilson said a self-proclaimed leader of the group admitted responsibility during an interview with Wired.com.
The false report of an active shooter led to an hours-long lockdown and widespread panic before law enforcement confirmed there was no actual threat. The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to identify and charge those responsible.
