South Carolina has confirmed its third measles case of the year — the most reported in the state since before the pandemic. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health (DHEC), the latest case involves an unvaccinated Upstate resident who recently returned from international travel to a country experiencing a measles outbreak.
Health officials emphasize the importance of the MMR vaccine, which is over 97% effective in preventing measles. With vaccination rates dipping to around 91–92%, doctors warn that herd immunity may be compromised. Measles is extremely contagious, spreading through the air and lingering for up to two hours after an infected person leaves a room.
