South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has signed an executive order that would prohibit SNAP recipients from using their benefits to buy candy, soda, energy drinks, and other sweetened beverages. The goal, McMaster says, is to protect taxpayer dollars and improve health outcomes across the state.
Critics argue the move unfairly targets low-income families and imposes unnecessary government restrictions. Supporters call it a “common sense” measure. The executive order directs the Department of Social Services to submit a waiver to the USDA within 14 days—and to keep trying until it’s approved.
Other states, including Florida and Texas, have passed similar restrictions, though not all are yet in effect. WSPA 7 News’ Caroline Yeager breaks down how South Carolina’s approach compares to others.
