Students at the University of South Carolina are trying to return to normal after a terrifying false alarm. An active shooter alert Sunday night locked down the Columbia campus for hours, prompting panic and confusion—especially at the Thomas Cooper Library.
USC Police now believe the alert was part of a nationwide “swatting” hoax targeting college campuses. Students described hiding in fear, texting loved ones goodbye, and grappling with the trauma even after the all-clear. While many resumed classes Monday, others say they didn’t feel safe returning. The university is offering counseling services, and the investigation with SLED remains ongoing.
