A South Carolina doula service is working to combat alarming maternal death rates among Black women. Birth Matters in Spartanburg County is hosting a “Healthy Beginnings” summit to help educate women about their rights and available resources during pregnancy and childbirth. Nationally, Black women are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women, according to the CDC.
