New developments in the state investigation into former Spartanburg County Sheriff Chuck Wright and a former department chaplain.
A letter from the South Carolina Attorney General’s Office reveals both men are under investigation by SLED, with Wright facing possible charges including misconduct in office, using his position for financial gain, and obtaining drugs by fraud.
The investigation follows a series of controversies, including accusations of wrongful termination, misuse of county funds, and ethical concerns after Wright deputized his son. Wright resigned in May citing health reasons.
The investigation has been transferred to another circuit, and nine candidates are now vying to take over the sheriff’s office in an upcoming special election.
