Tensions are rising in Spartanburg as city leaders consider relocating the city’s iconic downtown clock tower to make way for a new streetscaping project, hotel, and mixed-use development. The clock tower, located in Morgan Square, has long been considered a historic landmark by residents—many of whom are now pushing back against the proposal.
At a recent city council meeting, supporters of the “Save the Clock Tower” movement voiced concerns about losing a key piece of Spartanburg’s identity. Some are citing the South Carolina Heritage Act, hoping it could block the relocation. City officials have suggested preserving the clock, bell, and donor plaques in a government building, but for many locals, that’s not enough.
