SC Emergency Management urges people to prepare for freezing temperatures

COLUMBIA, SC, (FOX Carolina)- South Carolina Emergency Management said residents should prepare for below freezing conditions this weekend. Officials said they want to remind people to try and keep cold weather exposure to a minimum. According to officials, Hypothermia or a low body temperature can be lethal. They added that infants or elderly residents are particularly vulnerable to low temperatures. Officials recommend that people should stay indoors unless they must go somewhere. Those that must go out can dress in layers and cover their ears, mouth, head and hands to get warmer. Here are some tips from South Carolina Emergency Management to remember when temperatures begin to drop. Watch for signs of frostbite such as the loss of feeling and a white or pale appearance in body parts such as fingers, toes, ear lobes and the tip of your nose.Stay dry because wet clothing loses its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly.If using alternative sources for electricity, heating or cooking, be aware of the risk for carbon monoxide poisoning, electric shock and fire Never burn charcoal briquettes or run a generator indoors. Do not leave any flames unattendedRemember emergency supplies such as a flashlight and batteries, a battery-powered radio, non-perishable food, water, medicine, baby items, firewood and first-aid supplies.Wrap exposed pipes or try to insulate them from the cold. Freezing temperatures can cause water pipes to burst in homes that lack heat or proper insulation.Keep pet inside away from the cold. Make sure livestock animals have access to water and food. Check on the water as it could freeze over time.Check on elderly residents, at-risk neighbors and relatives during the storm.Watch out for potential ice patches on roadways and sidewalks. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Former Vice President Mike Pence is making another trip to drum up support among abortion opponents in the early-voting state of South Carolina. Pence will give a keynote address at the May fundraising banquet for the Carolina Pregnancy Center.That's according to a copy of an invitation obtained by The Associated Press. The organization has become a regular stop for GOP presidential hopefuls.Last year, Pence chose the fundraiser of another conservative Christian nonprofit in South Carolina as the scene of his first public address since the end of the Trump administration.Carolina Pregnancy Center, the host of Pence’s May return, is based in the state’s conservative northwest and has frequently played host to Republicans seeking their party’s nomination.
Gov. Cooper asks NC residents to use caution during winter weather

RALEIGH, NC (FOX Carolina)- North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper and other state officials urged residents to be careful as winter weather hits part of the state. Cooper warned that while most of the state had a break in precipitation, the worst part of the storm is expected to start later on today. “Roads will become more dangerous and power outages are still expected tonight in southeastern counties,” said Governor Cooper. “If you can, stay put and off the roads as that’s the best way to stay safe.” The State Highway Patrol advised drivers to slow down and stay away from other vehicles if they must get onto the road. They added that drivers should clean snow and ice off their car before getting onto the road and keep emergency supplies such as a window scraper, jumper cables, blankets and a shovel with them. Officials said utility companies have restored power to areas impacted by last week's storm and are ready to respond to the power outages expected this weekend. Cooper signed a state of emergency on Wednesday to prepare for this storm.
