Tensions are escalating in Oconee County after a developer’s proposed housing project was rejected by the county council. When the plan for a massive 600-acre residential and commercial development was denied due to exceeding density guidelines, the disagreement spilled onto social media.
County Council Chair Matthew Durham publicly pushed back against what he called “threats” from developer Mark Hart, who denies the accusation and insists he’s seeking a path forward. The project, located in a federal opportunity zone, was pitched as a long-term plan to promote growth—but county leaders say it simply doesn’t fit zoning rules.
