A new bill is being considered that could make breast cancer follow-up tests significantly more affordable. While initial mammograms are typically covered by insurance, additional tests like MRIs and ultrasounds can cost patients hundreds or even thousands of dollars out of pocket.
The proposed legislation would require private insurers to cover all medically necessary follow-up breast imaging without any co-pays, deductibles, or co-insurance. Advocates say this would help ensure earlier cancer detection, improve survival rates, and reduce the financial burden on families.
More than 25 other states already have similar laws in place. Lawmakers are expected to revisit the bill in their next session.
