DeVos touring two Upstate schools later today

BELTON, SC (FOX Carolina) -- U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos is headed to the Upstate this morning to tour two Anderson County schools. DeVos, along with U.S. Deputy Secretary of Education Dr. Mitchell “Mick” Zais, will first stop at Belton Preparatory Academy at 10:15 a.m. The secretary will tour the charter school's socially distanced classrooms before sitting down for a roundtable discussion with parents, teachers and students. One topic of discussion will be the school’s reopening strategy. The Belton Preparatory Academy re-opened with full time face-to-face learning with the option for families to go completely virtual, which mirrors the plan public schools in the area followed. The school is currently reporting zero staff COVID-19 cases and fewer than five student cases, according to SCDHEC. After touring Belton Preparatory Academy, DeVos and Zais will head to the Anderson Institute of Technology. The school offers hands on learning for high school students in areas that range from welding, veterinary sciences and cybersecurity.
Family of Greenville nightclub shooting victim speaks out

GREENVILLE,SC (FOX Carolina)-A 23-year-old mother Mykala Bell and CJ Sterling were fatally shot after the Lavish Lounge shooting along White Horse Road. Her mother and father are now speaking with Shale Remien three months after she was killed. “The whole thing replays in my head like Groundhog's Day... every day,” Tosha Arnold, Mykala’s mother said. One of the most unnatural things a parent can do, Tasha and Christopher Arnold have lived through. "As a mother just to hear your child scream after she’s been shot, they didn’t show it of course but just to hear her scream I will never forget that." Mykala’s mother remembers vividly seeing her daughter for the last time. "She was wearing white and walked past a pillar, there’s a big pillar at my uncle’s house. She said “I’ll see you tomorrow.” And the next time I saw her was in a casket,” Arnold said. Hurt remains as investigators search for other suspects. The Greenville County Sheriff’s Office was once investigating, however they say the case has been turned over to the ATF. Her parents said they need a space to fully honor Michaela, not just for themselves but for her to children. Arnold says she shows them pictures of Bell and they scream “That’s Mommy, that’s mommy!” Because Bell is older than 19, she cannot be claimed under her parents life insurance. They said their claim was denied forcing them to face thousands of dollars in expenses. "They won’t let them bring the headstone out until the grave is paid for. We do owe the funeral home money as well." Deputies investigating after victim injured during attempted theft

(ANDERSON, SC)- Deputies from Anderson County say they are investigating an incident that occurred on Manley Dr. off of S. Murray Avenue in Anderson on Monday night. According to the Anderson County Sheriff's Office, two suspects arrived at a residence to buy an unspecified piece of property. The seller of the property brought it to the car when deputies say that the suspects tried to steal the seller's property and attempted to drive away. According to authorities, the victim was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Deputies say an investigation into the incident is ongoing.
