Inflation and winter weather makes for a messy mix

GREENVILLE COUNTY, SC (FOX Carolina) - Inflation concerns continue to grow as consumer prices continue to rise. Families are filling the pressure. Grocery store visits, prices at the pump, retail shopping; it’s all gotten more expensive. Consumers are paying more attention to those receipts Winter weather moving closer to the Carolinas, grocery stores are packed and shelves are empty. Price and demand increase, plus item shortages are a recipe for disaster. “We actually sat down at the beginning of this year and reworked budgets. We didn’t make anymore money but we have to reallocate. So, groceries are costing more so therefore our eating out budget went down,” said Kathryn Gamet. She is a wife and mother of six children. The budget for the Gamer family is $150 a week for groceries.
Upstate woman charged after leading police on wild chase across 3 counties

SENECA, SC (FOX Carolina) - “I heard the racket and looked out my window,” said Thomas Brown Jr., who told Fox Carolina he had no idea that a chase that ended on his street at 3:30 AM Thursday began two counties over. “I heard more sirens, then an ambulance came by,” he recounted. Before Brown and other Seneca residents were awoken, it all started on White Horse Road, when a Greenville County deputy pulled up to a red Chevy Sonic parked outside a local business at 2:35 AM; its passenger door was open. The Sheriffs Office says, as the deputy approached, the driver threw the car in reverse, hitting his patrol car, then sped off toward Old Easley Highway. “I couldn’t figure out why there was so much damage – and the vehicle kept going," said Brown. The driver of that red Chevy Sonic, now identified by the sheriffs office as 26-year-old Rachel Nichole Parsons, crossed Pickens county with deputies following. They say she then approached the Seneca city limits via Highway 123, and Oconee County picked up the chase. Oconee County deputies say she almost stopped for law-enforcement in their incident report, but that she sped off again at the very last minute. “Just some crazy people out there, you know?" Brown remarked. Deputies say Parsons' passenger tires were already deflated, and that sparks were flying from her car as she wore them down to the rims, cutting up the road too. Law enforcement also says they laid out spikes near the Domino's Pizza on the 123 bypass, which Parsons ran over with all four tires, swerving into oncoming traffic. But – she kept going. The chase finally ended on an Radisson Rd. in Seneca, just beyond the front yard of Brown‘s sister-in-law, who lives next-door to him. “If it had been another time of day, somebody might’ve gotten hurt bad," Brown said. He says thankfully, the only casualty was his relatives' mailbox. Both sheriff's offices--saying that the deputies involved are all OK. They also say they had to pull Parsons from the car, and that they found heroin and meth on her dashboard. She’s charged with drug possession, hitting two patrol cars, property damage, and other traffic violations. Brown says he’s happy it was just a mailbox, because it could have ended a whole lot worse. Parsons is locked up in Oconee jail on those charges. Fox Carolina is working to get her mugshot, which has not been released by the Oconee County Jail. Restaurant Week begins in Greenville amidst COVID-19 surge, winter weather concerns

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - It's <a href="https://restaurantweeksouthcarolina.com/city/greenville/" target="_blank">Restaurant Week</a> in Greenville! The bi-annual event offers a chance for local restaurants to get connected to new customers and the community a chance to find local spots they've never been to before. "We really enjoy restaurant week, it brings in a different crowd. And we're trying to bring in diversity into Greenville with a Spanish concept," said April Moro, Abanico Tapas Bar and Restaurant Owner. "I think for us the first thing is giving back to Greenville right now. I mean through these hard times Greenville has really supported us and our vision of what we're trying to do here so the first thing we want to do is really give back so that's our first focus is thank you Greenville, thank you everybody who has supported us. The other thing is exposure," added Maestro Bistro & Dinner Club Chef Gene Magliaro. The week comes as winter weather is expected to bring snow and ice to the Upstate. At Maestro Bistro, the restaurant is typically closed on Sunday's and does not expect much of an impact from the weather. While at Abanico's, owners there say they are ready to roll with whatever comes their way even if that means having to temporarily close if the weather demands before opening back up after it passes. The weather is not the only hurdle, many restaurants are facing a staffing shortage as we are in the latest phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. While some restaurants, like Maestro Bistro, say they are lucky and have not faced staffing shortages, others say while they have enough staff the hard part is keeping them all healthy at the same time. "We have about recovered the staff amount that we had previous but now it's an issue of there's somebody sick almost all the time. So it affects different areas or they've had exposure so you don't want them coming in and exposing everybody else," said Moro. And with this latest surge, are restaurants seeing fewer customers come through the door? Those FOX Carolina spoke to say that compared to this time last year or summer 2020, there are a lot more customers coming in right now. Community members say that this latest surge is not fully stopping them from going out to their favorite restaurants either. "I think for us if we go to a restaurant we do kind of take a look quickly and see like how close together the tables are, how compact it is, how many people are in there. I do think we're a little bit more conscience of that. We find that most of the restaurants right now have really good spacing between customers and of late we've felt pretty comfortable eating out," explained Marjan Schoettelkotte, who lives in Greer. Restaurant weeks runs through Jan. 23, with about 55 participating restaurants in Greenville.
