Clemson research team finds new way to target breast cancer

CLEMSON, SC (FOX CAROLINA) - A Clemson professor and his research team are working on a study that could literally be a life-saver for people battling breast cancer, according to a press release from Clemson University. The idea is to use the body's own immune system to target and fight off cancer cells. "The idea is to use this bifunctional protein to bridge the natural killer cells and breast cancer tumor cells," said Clemson University professor Dr. Yanzhang Wei for the Department of Biological Sciences in the release. "If the two cells are brought close enough together through this receptor ligand connection, the natural killer cells can release what I call killing machinery to have the tumor cells killed." This novel approach to develop breast cancer-specific immunotherapy could lead to new treatment options for the world's most common cancer. Dr. Wei and his team target prolactin receptors in this research. Prolactin is a natural hormone in the body and plays a role in breast growth and milk production during breastfeeding. It is mentioned that Wei is now seeking funding for an animal model study to confirm results. It is also mentioned that if the animal model studies are successful, the potential new treatment could move to human clinical trials. Deputies investigate shooting in Seneca Wednesday evening

WALHALLA, SC (FOX CAROLINA) - The Oconee County Sheriff's Office said they are investigating a shooting that happened on Wednesday evening near Seneca. According to deputies, they received a call around 8:49 p.m. of a man laying in the middle of Mormon Church Road with a gunshot wound to the leg. Deputies say the man was taken by an ambulance to the hospital. They go on to say no information about the victim or his condition will be released. China launches first three-man crew to new space station

JIUQUAN, China (AP) — China has launched the first three-man crew to its new space station in its the ambitious programs first crewed mission in five years. The astronauts are traveling in the Shenzhou-12 spaceship launched by a Long March-2F Y12 rocket that blasted off Thursday morning from the Jiuquan launch center in northwestern China. After liftoff, the two veteran astronauts and one newcomer will proceed to the station that remains under construction for a three-month stay at the station’s main Tianhe living module for three months while they carry out experiments, test equipment, conduct maintenance and prepare the station for receiving two additional modules next year.
