'Since when does a traffic violation result in murder?' - Family of man killed by Greenville Co. deputies wants answers

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - At a press conference Tuesday, the Culbertson family said they are pushing tears aside and breaking their silence. Greenville County deputies fatally shot their son Michael Culbertson after they said he was wanted for several traffic violations. After reviewing the body camera footage taken off three deputies, this family believes it was handled in the wrong way. "This did not have to happen this way. They had seven special trained officers 3 feet from a 117 pound young man," Daryl Culbertson said. Daryl is Michael's father. Deputies had searched for Culbertson for several days for several days on multiple active warrants including resisting arrest, failure to stop for blue lights, interfering with police and reckless driving. "You don’t even see stuff like this on TV. This doesn’t make any sense to me. Since when does a traffic violation result in murder?" Daryl Culbertson asked. Culbertson said alongside his family and Paul Guy that he believes deputies did not take enough steps to announce themselves from the beginning, coming out of an unmmarked van. The Greenville County Sheriff's office said in the released footage, five out of the seven deputies fired their weapon. "You can hear them screaming "He’s down, he’s down cease fire, cease fire,' but they’re just still shooting him. It was like he was pinata. It’s not okay," Culbertson said. Culbertson admits the family was working with deputies to try and coax Michael out of hiding, but they never envisioned it ending like this. The shooting happened just feet away from Michael's grandfather's front door. "As (Sheriff) Lewis noted to TV stations that Michael pointed a gun at his deputy and they shot and killed him. That never happened if you watch the video. He never pointed a gun at anybody," Carey Culberston said. Culbertson was armed at the time of the shooting. After an internal investigation, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office said the shooting was justified and reviewed by the internal review board. This family said they believe if proper steps were taken, the situation could have ended differently. "He was a scared boy. They never identified themselves as police officers. I believe in the system, I backed the system up and they let me down, and my child is dead because of it," Daryl Culbertson said. GCSO has not commented as of writing. SLED is still investigating. Activist says peaceful demonstration over outcome of Breonna Taylor case being planned in Greenville

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – Activist Bruce Wilson said Black Lives Matter is planning a peaceful demonstration in Greenville to call for justice after the news from Louisville that one officer had been indicted following Breonna Taylor’s death in March, not for her death, but for “wanton endangerment” for firing a gun through a wall in Taylor’s home. If you shoot through Breonna Taylor, then you get paid time off.” “It’s sad,” Wilson continued. “When will it change that, in America a wall will receive more justice than a black person? And we keep seeing it time and time again.” Wilson said Taylor’s family in Louisville, KY needs justice, and he had an answer for anyone who asks why protest in Greenville when it didn’t happen here: “We’re going to stand with that family because IT COULD have happened in Greenville,” Wilson said. Wilson said the demonstration is being planned for Saturday afternoon in downtown Greenville but could begin earlier.
Possible scam attempt targeting SNAP and DNS clients in Buncombe County

ASHEVILLE, NC (FOX Carolina) - Buncombe County Health and Human Services (BCHHS) said the community should be on alert for a possible scam attempt targeting Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Food Nutrition Services (FNS) clients. BCHHS said the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) recently informed local SNAP offices of SNAP fraud attempts that are looking to obtain personal information via text message. BCHHS said people are getting the following text messages: “Your FNS case is about to close, click here to keep the case open" and “You just qualified for foods stamps - get started here, it's free". BCHHS said personal information includes your social security number, bank information, or SNAP electronic benefits transfer card or PIN number. The text might say you have been chosen to receive food stamps or SNAP or that your FNS case is about to close. BCHHS Economic Services Director, Phillip Hardin, said in a media release, “We have had numerous calls to our agency about this scam with people worried about their benefits being cancelled because they got this text message. We want to assure and remind our community that BCHHS would never text our clients about their benefits and we encourage those who are concerned about their benefits to call us if they have questions.” BCHHS said if you receive a text and think it is a scam, do not reply at all and delete the message. If SNAP participants are unsure if a request for information is legitimate, the USDA advises they contact their local SNAP office.
