  • SC 'Heartbeat Bill' heads to Senate floor for debate
    on January 26, 2021 at 8:35 am

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Upstate Senator Josh Kimbrell says that to him, it's cut and dry “It’s not something that’s philosophically debatable," Kimbrell told FOX Carolina. “A heartbeat is a biological function. We know that roughly 6 weeks into a pregnancy, a heartbeat is detectable. And what we are saying is, at that point, we are not going to end a life," he emphasized. SC Senate Bill 1 states that the only exception to the rule are in cases where a mother's life is in danger – defined as a medical emergency. Upstate representative Chandra Dillard says that she doesn’t believe this is responsible, and that she won't be voting for the legislation when it gets to the House. “I am not supportive of the bill because I believe it is a woman’s right to choose, and that conversation should be between her, the family, and their physician,” she explained. Kimbrell contends that he believes this bill isn’t targeting women at all. “When you get to the point where you are talking about a separate heartbeat, you are talking about a separate person," he maintained. The bill would make the penalty for any doctor Who performs an abortion after 6 weeks a felony, punishable by up to 2 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both. “I don’t want any woman to feel she doesn’t have a choice," Kimbrell said. “I would support exceptions for rape and incest, as long as there are were some reporting requirements that make sure that isn’t abused." Dillard says the whole premise of this bill is borderline unconstitutional. Furthermore, she believes this is a topic that should be debated at a later date, saying the discussion around the 'Heartbeat Bill' is missing the real mark and ignoring pressing issues to play politics instead. “I am – I am really outdone that this is first on the agenda," she exclaimed. “Top of the day should be trying to get vaccinations to the people for this virus that is killing everyone. At the end of the day, what are we doing with the agenda for the people of South Carolina?" Both Dillard and Kimbrell believe the bill will pass. It has failed before, but to clear procedural hurdles this year, Republicans need 26 votes. They currently have a 30-16 majority. Democrats are expected to uniformly oppose the bill.

  • Vigil held in honor of Cobey Smith, victim of unsolved murder
    on January 26, 2021 at 5:46 am

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - Six years ago, 16-year-old Cobey Smith was gunned down in the Nicholtown community. However, his friends and family still don’t know who is responsible for the crime. A vigil was held in coordination with Jack Logan of Put Down the Guns Now Young people, and Greenville police. They marched from the Phyllis Wheatley Community Center parking lot to an area near where the shooting happened. For the first time, Cobey’s mother was in attendance to the vigil. Betty Smith says the pain of losing her son is something she doesn’t reminisce about because of the grief and devastation. “God is keeping me. All I want is justice for my son because he didn’t deserve nothing that he got. He was not a bad child, he was a good person. For them to do him that way, I don’t know why,” Betty said. A Captain with the Greenville Police Department was there, too. He says the investigations department currently has 16 cold cases for the city, including Cobey’s. The biggest problem they are running into is credible leads and people coming forward with information. As this case continues to sit open, those who may know anything that could help are asked to call crime stoppers at 23-CRIME. • Officials warn of new COVID-19 vaccine scam
    on January 26, 2021 at 3:24 am

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina)- South Carolina Emergency Management and DHEC are waving a red flag, warning people about scammers taking advantage during the pandemic. "It's really disgusting....trying to take advantage of people who desperately want to get their first shot of the COVID-19 vaccine in exchange for money." Derrec Becker with South Carolina Emergency Management said there are people trying to take money and steal people's identity as the vaccination roll out continues. He said scammers will call or text asking a person to verify their personal information and then take it a step further by suggesting they could assure someone a place in line, or even skip the wait with just the exchange of a credit card. "Anything from offering a cure that doesn't exist to 'we can assure you a place in line if you pay us a certain amount of money.' It's fraud, it's a complete scam," Becker said. As part of the vaccination task force, Becker said the vaccine distribution is so limited, creating a feel of desperation for the elderly. He said scams like this are a breeding ground for especially the elderly who fall into Phase 1A. "The only time you should be exchanging any sort of information is when you actually make an appointment with a health care provider to actually receive the real COVID-19 vaccine," Officials say if you see a text or call asking you to verify your information or if they offer you a spot ahead of the rest, hang up. "When you know it’s not right, trust your instincts on that," Becker said.
