AARP: South Carolina leads the nation in nursing home deaths from COVID-19

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) Thousands of people have died in nursing homes from COVID-19 this year. According to a new report released from AARP, South Carolina tops the list for the country's death rate. Behind the gates of Shepherd's Care Assisted Living are some tough soldiers. "They've see the Depression, and wars, they've handling this a lot better than you or I would," Eric Thompson said. Thompson is the administrator at the facility. He said the facility has been fortunate to not have had any COVID-19 cases among their residents. According to AARP, they are considered very lucky. "Just so we understand the numbers, senior residents account for 1% of our population in South Carolina. Yet residences in nursing homes account for 41% of all deaths due to COVID," Nikki Hutchison said. Hutchison works for AARP. "We want to be the first in a lot of things but for deaths in nursing homes due to COVID related, that’s not where we wanna be," Hutchison said. AARP reports 84,000 nursing home residents and staff have died from COVID-19 across the nation. More than 1,300 are in South Carolina. "We practice distancing so when we were in a room together were quite a ways we still have activities," Laura Pratt, a resident said. AARP is blowing the whistle saying it believes more measures could be in put in place statewide to make these cases go down. The company wants DHEC and the governor to made aware of the alarming trend. They suggest more PPE being equally dispersed and suggest testing before allowing visitors into the nursing homes. Newberry County Sheriff's Office searching for armed home-invasion suspect

NEWBERRY, SC (FOX Carolina)-The Newberry County Sheriff's Office says that it, in partnership with several other law enforcement agencies, are searching for a suspect they say is armed who was involved in a home invasion on Dennis Dairy Ln. in Newberry. Deputies say the suspect was involved in a confrontation at a house on Dennis Dairy Ln. when he struck a male and female victim on the head with a semi-automatic pistol. Authorities say the suspect then tied up the both victims and stole their vehicle. According to authorities, a South Carolina Department of Natural Resources officer spotted the vehicle on South Carolina Highway 34 west of Silverstreet, but authorities were unable to stop the car as the suspect drove into a pasture and fled into a wooded area. Deputies are working with the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division and say that the suspect should be considered armed and dangerous. The suspect is described as a 5'5" male with salt and pepper hair wearing a camouflaged jacket with a black bandanna over his face. According to the Newberry County Sheriff's Office, anyone living in the Silverstreet area near Green Acres and Moses Rd. should take precautions and lock all car doors and doors to their home. Deputies are asking the public not to approach this man and to call 911 if he is located. Coroner identifies victim in deadly crash in Moore

MOORE, SC (FOX Carolina)- The Spartanburg County Coroner's Office says it has identified the victim of a deadly collision that took place in Moore, South Carolina earlier on Monday. The victim was 58-year-old James Darrell Yarborough, according to a release from the coroner's office. Spartanburg County Coroner Charles "Rusty" Clevenger confirms that Yarborough's death was caused by multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene at 08:50 Monday morning.
